Renho Murata (村田蓮舫) was elected to the House of Councillors as a member of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in 2004. Born in Tokyo (1967) to a Taiwanese father and Japanese mother, she took Japanese citizenship in 1985. In 1990, she graduated from the law faculty of Aoyama Gakuin University. She worked as a newscaster on TBS and TV Asahi before becoming a politician.
