Abroad Japan is better known for its concrete-and-asphalt-only
cities and overcrowded trains and subways than trees and nature.
Yet, Japan is one of the most forested countries in the world;
over 60 procent of the country is covered with trees.

One of the better places to get a look at all these trees
is the Japanese Alps. The Alps consist of three ranges, the Northern,
Central and Southern Alps. Of these, the northern range has the
most to offer. Just 2 hours away from Tokyo, it is one of Japan's
most beautiful mountain areas with countless trails and amazing
views.

Autumn is the best time to pay a visit to
Nagano. Amazingly blue skies and flaming red trees create an
awesome contrast.

Here you will find relaxing hot springs which even the local
monkeys have taken a liking to, a wide variety of plants and
animals--don't be surprised to come eye-to-eye with mountain
goats--, several active volcanoes and lots of ski slopes.
