Near the harbor town of Kobe lies the city of Akashi, centuries
long the supplier of sea food to most of western Japan. The city
is especially famous for its many kinds of octopusoffered
from dried to lifesea bream, shrimp and eel.

A stroll through the 240 meter long Uo no Tana (fish
shelf) arcade is a sheer delight. Over a hundred shops offer
any kind of sea food you can possibly imagine. The dark and crowded
arcade bustles with activity as fish mongers try to outshout
each other and take care of their customers all at the same time.

Every day before dawn the fish are caught in nearby Akashi
Strait. In the morning customers buy them still flapping. By
noon there is usually little left to buy. With so much excellent
fresh fish laying around it is only natural that the area also
teems with great restaurants and sushi bars.
The market is a 5 minute walk from the JR and Sanyo Dentetsu
Akashi Stations. Approach from JR Osaka or Sannomiya (Kobe).
